Sleeper bus catches fire near toll plaza, all passengers safe
LUCKNOW, Oct. 27 -- As many as 39 passengers travelling in a private sleeper bus had a narrow escape early Sunday morning after the vehicle caught fire near the Rewari toll plaza on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, police said.
The bus, on its way from Delhi to Gonda via Lucknow, caught fire around 4:45am on Sunday, a senior police officer said, speaking on condition of anonymity. All passengers were safely evacuated before the vehicle was gutted, he added.
Teams of Kakori police and the fire brigade rushed to the spot on receiving alerts. Firefighters brought the blaze under control within an hour, the officer said. He added that the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, adding that a technical team will examine the vehicle to find out what caused the fire.
The incident comes amid rising concerns over sleeper buses across the country. On Friday, 19 passengers were killed when a Hyderabad-Bengaluru sleeper bus caught fire in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district after hitting a bike that was lying on the road after an accident. Earlier, 25 people were killled after a short circuit in the air conditioning system triggered a devastating blaze in sleeper bus in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer.
According to the bus driver, Jagat Singh, the fire broke out about 500metres before the Rewari toll plaza.
The bus company later arranged another vehicle to transport the passengers to their destination. Police said the affected bus was moved aside, and traffic on the expressway resumed soon after.
The officer said that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway....
