Six tents gutted in fire at Mela, none injured
PRAYAGRAJ, Jan. 15 -- Panic gripped the Magh Mela area after a fire broke out at a Kalpavasi camp 'Bade-Chhote Brahm Maharaj Ashram' in Sector No. 4, destroying six tents and gutting cash and belongings worth around Rs.20,000, here on Wednesday. The incident occurred at a time when lakhs of devotees were in the tent city for the Makar Sankranti snan.
Due to strong flames and gusty winds, three nearby Swiss cottages and one tent belonging to Prakash Chandra Mishra's organisation also caught fire. The sudden blaze led to panic among Kalpavasis and pilgrims, resulting in a brief stampede-like situation as people rushed out shouting for help.
Upon receiving information, the fire department deployed eight small and large fire tenders to the site and successfully controlled the situation.
Chief fire officer (Mela) Animesh Singh stated that prima facie, the fire appears to have been caused by the flame of a burning lamp used by a devotee. However, a detailed investigation is underway.
No casualties were reported in the incident, he said.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, two tents at the Shri Ram and Manas Prachar Sangh (Shri Namayan Dham) camp on Kali Road (northern stretch) in Sector No. 5 were damaged in a fire.
