Haldwani/Pithoragarh/Rudrapur, June 26 -- At least six people were killed and four severely injured in rain related incidents in Uttarakhand on Wednesday, police officials aware of the matter said. While four people of a family died in Haldwani after their car fell into a canal, another man lost his life after his car plunged into the Gori River in Pithoragarh district. In another incident, an 8-year-old girl died after a wall collapsed on her. Four members of a family, including a newborn child, died after their car fell into a canal near Rampur Road in Haldwani city in Nainital district of Uttarakhand on Wednesday morning amid heavy rain, a police officer aware of the matter said, adding that three others were injured. Haldwani superintendent of police (SP) Prakash Chandra said the family, after the birth of the child at Sushila Tiwari Hospital on June 22, was returning home to Kichha town when the car went out of control due to waterlogging and fell into the canal. He added that Rakesh Kumar (32), his sister-in-law Neetu (36), his mother Kamala Devi (50) and his newborn baby died in the accident while his wife Rama (28), brother-in-law Ramesh (42), and driver Shyam Lal (45) have been admitted to Sushila Tiwari Hospital in critical condition. The SP said, "After receiving information about a car falling into a canal on Rampur Road, we rushed to the spot. We carried out a rescue operation and took out the car from the canal and subsequently, people trapped inside the vehicle. Four people died, while three in injured condition were rushed to the hospital." He added, "All victims, including injured, were from Udham Singh Nagar district." Expressing grief over the loss of lives in the accident, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami posted on X, "Received the tragic news of a car accident in Haldwani, resulting in the death of four people and injuries to three others. I pray to God for speedy recovery of all the injured." Meanwhile, in Pithoragarh, one person died and another was severely injured after a car skidded off the road and plunged into the Gori River near Balmara on the Jauljibi-Munsiyari route on Wednesday. According to Jauljibi station house officer (SHO) Sanjeev Kumar, the vehicle lost control amid heavy downpour and fell into the river. Police rescue teams rushed to the spot and rescued two people - Ajit Pal and Dinesh Chandra. "While being taken to the hospital, Ajit Pal succumbed to his injuries. Dinesh Chandra was admitted to a local hospital and is undergoing treatment," the SHO said. In another incident, an 8-year-old girl lost her life on Wednesday after a wall collapsed on her during heavy rains in Khatima area of Udham Singh Nagar district. The incident occurred while she was assisting her brother in planting paddy saplings near their home in Khetalsanda Mustazar village. The girl, identified as Shivangi, was helping her 14-year-old brother Abhiraj with paddy transplantation in a field adjacent to their house. According to eyewitnesses, continuous rainfall led to the collapse of a pucca wall, which fell directly on Shivangi, burying her underneath. Neighbours rushed to the scene and managed to pull her out from the debris. Her uncle Charan Singh and former village head Virendra Raj took her to the sub-district government hospital in Khatima, where doctors declared her brought dead, police said. Dr Abbas, the attending medical officer, confirmed, "The girl was brought in by villagers, but she had already succumbed to her injuries. We informed both the police and the revenue department." Following the incident, police officials reached the hospital and took the body into custody for autopsy, after which the body was handed over to the family....
