Six arrested, Rs 42 lakh Hawala cash recovered
VARANASI, April 2 -- The Kotwali Police in Varanasi arrested six accused in connection with the codeine cough syrup case and recovered Rs 42 lakh hawala cash, three currency-counting machines, 10 mobile phones, and two bags, police said on Wednesday.
Those arrested were identified as Ashok, 22, of Delhi, Mohit Saraswa 25, Ram Avtar 33, Girdhari, 20, all three residents of Dungargarh area of Bikaner, in Rajasthan; Santosh Giri, 44 of Ghazipur; Om Prakash Kharwar, 51, of Ballia, said a police officer.
A police officer said that it came to light that Shubham Jaiswal's close associate, Vaibhav Jaiswal, was providing funds obtained from cough syrup to his associates through hawala. Police detained and interrogated Vaibhav Jaiswal, leading to the arrest of six other accused linked to this hawala network.
Approximately Rs.42 lakh was recovered from the seven accused, including around Rs 22.50 lakh in cash from accused Vaibhav Jaiswal and Rs 19,66,146 in cash was recovered from the six accused. The Income Tax department has been informed of the seizure and necessary action has been taken, said the officer. Additionally, large amounts of Rs.1, Rs.10, Rs.20, and Rs.50 notes were recovered, which were used as tokens or identification in hawala transactions, said Vijai Pratap Singh, assistant commissioner of police.
The search for other individuals involved in the case is ongoing, and the network's international links are also being thoroughly investigated, said the ACP and added that Coordination with relevant agencies will be established if necessary....
