SIT gathers evidence from key accused in UKSSSC paper leak
Dehradun/Haldwani, Sept. 29 -- The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the Uttarakhand Subordinate Service Selection Commission (UKSSSC) graduate-level exam paper case gathered evidence from the accused Khalid's house in Haridwar's Laksar and the exam centre in Bahadurpur Jat, where he appeared in the exam on September 21.
The Uttarakhand government on September 24 announced the SIT under supervision of a retired high court judge to probe the UKSSSC paper leak case. Jaya Baloni, superintendent of police, Rishikesh, is the SIT chief.
Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajai Singh said, "The SIT on Saturday held a public dialogue with candidates and the general public at the Collectorate in Haridwar. The team briefed them on developments so far, responded to their queries, and received suggestions that will be examined and included in the probe report."
"The SIT had secured a warrant from the Uttarakhand High Court to search the house of accused Khalid. Evidence related to the examination was recovered from his residence. The team later inspected the examination centre at Bahadurpur Jat, where he appeared for the graduate level exam, questioned the staff on duty, and recorded their statements."
The police on September 24 arrested key accused, Khalid (35), who, while appearing in the exam centre, photographed pages of the question paper and sent them to his mobile phone, which was in possession of his sister Sabia, who subsequently transmitted them to Suman, an assistant professor in Tehri Garhwal. The solved answers were sent back to Khalid. It is alleged that screenshots of these pages went viral on social media shortly after the examination began. On September 23, the police arrested Sabia.
According to the police, Khalid had missed selection in previous competitive exams and hatched a scheme to secure answers during the test.
Meanwhile, the protest led by Uttarakhand Berozgar Sangh (unemployed union) at Dehradun's Parade Ground continued for the 7th day, as the government failed to persuade the protestors that strict action will be taken against culprits based on SIT's probe report, as they stick to their demand of re-examination, and a CBI probe into alleged irregularities in government examinations.
The protestors are also seeking resignation of UKSSSC Chairman GS Martolia, and amendments to police constable recruitment rules.
Meanwhile, agitating youth gathered at Buddha Park on Nainital Road in Haldwani on Sunday to demand a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the recent UKSSSC paper leak.
Organised under the banner of Uttarakhand Yuva Ekta Manch, the protestors played the hand-held air horn in front of a buffalo poster-an act, they claimed, was meant to metaphorically "wake up" the state government.
The protesters originally intended to perform the act in front of a real buffalo, but were denied permission by the police administration. Undeterred, they carried out their protest using a large buffalo poster instead.
Piyush Joshi, convener of the Uttarakhand Yuva Ekta Manch, said, "Playing the horn in front of the buffalo is our way of sending a strong message to the state government. That time has come they should wake up. Until a CBI investigation is ordered and the compromised UKSSSC exam is cancelled, we will continue our agitation. The youth deserve a fair and transparent recruitment process."
Apart from CBI investigation, the protestors are demanding that the exam be cancelled and re-conducted under strict vigilance to restore public trust in the recruitment system.
The protestors vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are met....
