Sikh delegation protests after NEET aspirant AllEgedly asked to remove 'kara'
LUCKNOW, May 7 -- A delegation of the Lucknow Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (LGPC) has strongly protested against an incident during the NEET UG held on May 4, where a Sikh candidate was allegedly forced to remove his 'kirpan' and 'kara'-religious symbols considered sacred in Sikhism-before being allowed entry to the exam centre at Shri Jai Narain PG College, Lucknow.
"This incident is not just about one student; it concerns the dignity of an entire community and the basic rights granted by the Constitution," said LGPC secretary Harpal Singh Jaggi, after meeting college authorities.
LGPC president Sardar Rajendra Singh Bagga noted that similar complaints have surfaced from various cities. "Such actions are deeply distressing for the Sikh community and have led to growing resentment," he said. On Tuesday, a delegation from the LGPC met with professor Vinod Chandra, principal of Shri Jai Narain Mishra PG College.
