MEERUT, Sept. 12 -- Meerut senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dr Vipin Tada has suspended station house officer (SHO) Divya Pratap Singh and sub-inspector (SI) Rohit Babu from duty on the charges of neglect and misconduct. The action follows allegations that the two officers harassed a rape survivor instead of providing support and justice. The survivor, a resident of Mundali police station area, had been seeking justice for a long time, requesting medical examination and the registration of an FIR against the accused. However, instead of addressing her grievances, the police officers allegedly dismissed her pleas and forced her out of the station without hearing her out. Around six days ago, frustrated by the lack of action at the police station, she approached the SSP's office during a public hearing. She alleged that the local police were not only denying her help but also attempting to shield the accused. Her complaint drew immediate attention from the senior administration. SSP Vipin Tada took the complaint seriously and directed the SHO to register the case and begin proper proceedings without delay. However, the police station failed to comply with these directions, and instead, the victim was subjected to further harassment and humiliation. In response to the negligence and mistreatment of the victim, SSP Dr Vipin Tada suspended both officers, underscoring a zero-tolerance policy toward dereliction of duty and abuse of authority. The SSP reiterated that any attempt to silence victims or shield offenders would not be tolerated. He emphasised that the police department remains committed to upholding justice and safeguarding the rights of victims, particularly in sensitive cases of sexual assault....
