India, Nov. 29 -- Kirtilal Kalidas Doshi was a doyen of India's gems and diamond industry. The man responsible for founding the Gemmological Institute of India, he was also instrumental in the formation of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council and played a key role in drafting its constitution. Chairman of Shrenuj & Company, a leading firm in its time, Doshi was the voice of the jewellery industry for many years. A devout Jain, he was closely associated with institutions connected to Jainism too. In addition, he was a poet, painter, philatelist and bibliophile who read widely and was always eager to share his knowledge. He compiled his favourite quotations into a number of books, which he distributed generously.
