Shahrukh guides UPs win bronze medal in hockey
LUCKNOW, Aug. 9 -- A spirited Uttar Pradesh came from behind to beat Madhya Pradesh 5-3 to win a bronze medal at the 15th Hockey India Sub-Junior Men National Championship 'Division A' in Chennai on Friday.
It was yet another brilliant performance by Uttar Pradesh boys in the national championship to continue with their podium finish for the third successive year after winning gold medals both in 2023 and 2024 editions.
Uttar Pradesh were trailing by 0-2 at the half-time, but after a change in the ends, things changed dramatically, and they scored five goals in contrast to MP's one.
MP forged into lead with a field goal by Aashir Aadil Khan in the 13th minute before Karan Gautam extended the lead further to 2-0 with another field goal in the 20th minute.
After a change in the ends, Uttar Pradesh shot back one through Atif Raynee in the 40th minute (1-2) before Shahrukh Ali struck consecutive goals in the 42nd, 47th and 51st minute to complete his hat-tri. Prahlad Rajbhar took the lead to 5-1 through a field goal in the 55th minute.
However, Meezan Ur Rehman scored the consolation goal for Madhya Pradesh in the 58th minute. "It's an important victory for Uttar Pradesh as for the third successive year, our boys managed to make a podium finish," Uttar Pradesh Hockey's secretary Rajneesh Mishra said on Friday. "This win has a lot meaning for the growth of hockey in Uttar Pradesh as our boys have been doing well in all age categories for the last many years."
Earlier, Punjab beat Jharkhand 4-3 in the final to win the title on Friday.
The summit clash between Jharkhand and Punjab was a closely contested one, with both teams fighting till the final whistle. Jharkhand scored two back-to-back goals in the second quarter through Ashish Tani Purti (21st) and Anish Dungdung (24th).
However, Punjab equalised with Akshit Salaria (29th) and Varinder Singh (30th) scoring in quick succession.
Jharkhand's Sukhu Guria (42nd) scored to give his team the lead once again. But a brace from Punjab's Mandeep Singh (45th, 53rd) sealed the deal for Punjab....
