Shahi Zarih to mark beginning of Muharram
LUCKNOW, June 26 -- Like every year, the Shahi Mom ki Zarih (tazia) will be taken out as part of the first Muharram procession from Bada Imambara to Chhota Imambara. The Muharram month is likely to begin on June 27.
The Zarih, a replica of the tomb of Imam Hussain (grandson of Prophet Muhammad) who attained martyrdom in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD, is an integral part of the procession. It has a square base and other structures including domes made on the top.
Emphasising the significance of the procession, historian Roshan Taqui said it was started by king Mohammad Ali Shah after signing an agreement with the East India Company.
"Shah had paid Rs 4 crore for the procession and maintenance of Chhota Imambara and the roads between both Imambaras. The work was taken over by the Hussainabad and Allied Trust (HAT) after its creation in 1872. The Shahi Mom ki Zarih is an identity of Lucknow's azadari (mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussain)," he said.
"People tried making Zarih of different materials and wax was added to beautify it and the tradition continues till date," Taqui said.
In view of the first Muharram procession, the traffic police department has announced diversions on certain routes on June 27.
"With large gatherings expected, several road restrictions and diversions will remain in place from 7am till the procession concludes," DCP (traffic) Kamlesh Dixit said....
