LUCKNOW, Dec. 13 -- A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Lucknow on Thursday convicted and sentenced two accused-Satya Narayan Prasad Patel, the then Village Pradhan, and Shahnawaj Alam, the then fair price shopkeeper (Kotedar)-to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) along with a total fine of Rs.55,000 for causing a wrongful loss of over Rs.1 crore to the government exchequer under the Sampurna Grameen Rozgar Yojna (SGRY), senior CBI officials confirmed while sharing a press note in this regard on Friday. The officials said the CBI had taken over the probe on October 31, 2008, registering a case against 172 accused persons, following the transfer of a case registered in 2006 from Narhi Police Station in Ballia district. According to the prosecution, the accused had inflicted a wrongful loss of Rs.65 lakh in cash and misappropriated food grains worth Rs.45.26 lakh, using forged documents, cheating, and fraudulent means to siphon off funds meant for rural employment. After completing its investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet on November 10, 2010, against three key individuals Satyendra Singh Gangwar, then chief finance & accounts officer, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Ballia, Satya Narayan Prasad Patel, then Village Pradhan and Shahnawaj Alam, then fair price shopkeeper (Kotedar).
