SGPGIMS doctors performs dual life-saving procedures
Lucknow, March 18 -- The interventional radiology team at SGPGIMS successfully performed two life-saving procedures on a young woman suffering from acute limb ischemia (ALI) in both legs, only to face a major stroke emergency shortly after the initial intervention. The patient, a woman in her late 20s with a history of rheumatic heart disease (RHD), arrived at SGPGIMS about a week ago with severe pain and coldness in both legs-symptoms of ALI, a life-threatening condition caused by clots migrating from the heart and blocking arteries in the legs. Left untreated, ALI can lead to leg amputation. Given the critical nature of her condition, the medical team, led by Dr Tanya Yadav and Dr Avinash D Gautam, opted for a minimally invasive emergency procedure-percutaneous catheter-directed thrombolysis and thrombectomy-to remove the clot and restore blood flow. The procedure was successful, saving the woman's legs from amputation. However, shortly after the intervention, the patient developed sudden neurological symptoms, including right-sided weakness and slurred speech-indications of a stroke. An MRI scan revealed an acute left middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion, confirming that clots from her heart had migrated to the brain, blocking blood flow. Recognising the urgency of the situation, the team immediately performed a mechanical thrombectomy using a microcatheter and microwire to remove the clot from her brain. The patient showed rapid neurological improvement in the following hours. Her stroke symptoms gradually subsided, her limb circulation remained stable, and she was eventually discharged in stable condition-fully independent in daily activities and with normal speech....
