SGPGI doctors treat rare bladder tumour with robotic surgery to
Lucknow, Dec. 28 -- Doctors at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) have treated a rare bladder tumour using a new robotic surgical technique, making it the first such reported case in the country, they claimed.
The doctors said the patient, who was a 60-year-old man, was suffering from urinary bladder paraganglioma, a rare tumour that can cause sudden health emergencies.
He had been repeatedly experiencing palpitations, fainting, severe headaches and sharp rises in blood pressure while passing urine.
The surgery was performed by Uday Pratap Singh, professor of urology and renal transplantation at SGPGIMS, along with his team, including Dr Sanchit Rustagi and Dr Snigdh Garg, stated the press release. Using a da Vinci Xi robotic system, the doctors removed the tumour by entering directly through the bladder, instead of opening the abdomen.
Prof. Singh said, "Such tumours are usually treated through open or laparoscopic surgery, which involves cutting through the abdomen and working close to vital organs."
By using the robotic transvesical approach, doctors avoided abdominal surgery and reduced the risk of damage to nearby organs.
The technique also helped in quicker recovery and less pain for the patient....
