Jhansi, Sept. 2 -- The forest department has booked five individuals who felled a four-decade-old peepal or fig tree, which killed scores of Indian cormorant chicks and left several others homeless, at a residential complex of this city's Premnagar area. The official figure put the number of dead birds at 30. As per reports, the incident took place 'Pyarelal ka Hata' complex, where a house owner decided to remove the tree since the birds often smeared his car with droppings. After the tree was cut, which took a couple of days, scores of birds nesting in the tree were caught under the branches, and many died. Reportedly, a 15-year-old boy saw the dying birds and raised an alarm on Sunday evening. He also tried to rescue those who were still alive, many of whom were newborns. Later, the forest department personnel arrived and relocated the birds to the nearby ponds, as they were mainly aquatic birds. District forest officer Neeraj Arya said they were in the process to lodge a case against five persons who have been initially identified to be involved in the felling of tree under related sections of the Wildlife Act and the Tree Protection Act.
