Seven convicted to life for human trafficking
VARANASI, Nov. 25 -- A court in Varanasi sentenced seven people to life in prison in a case of human trafficking, on Monday. The court also slapped a financial penalty of Rs 15,000 on each. The court had convicted the seven accused on November 21.
District government counsel, Munib Singh Chauhan said that on the basis of evidence during the hearing of the case, the court of additional district judge (FTC-I) Kuldeep Singh, sentenced Santosh Gupta, a resident of Shivdaspur in Varanasi, Manish Jain, a resident of Jaipur, Mahesh Rana a resident of Giridih-Jharkhand, Mukesh Pandit, resident of Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, Mahesh Rana a resident of Koderma, Jharkhand, Shikha Devi, a resident of Shivdaspur in Varanasi and Sunita Devi, a resident of Giridih, Jharkhand, to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 15,000 each. The court slapped an additional financial penalty of Rs 5,000 on Santosh Gupta, added Chauhan.
In the same case, the court acquitted nine other accused due to lack of evidence. They are Anuradha Devi (Hazaribagh), Jagbir Baranwal (Koderma), Sangeeta Devi (Koderma, Jharkhand), Santosh Saw (Koderma), Gudiya Devi (Koderma), Yashoda Pandit (Hazaribagh), Shivam Gupta alias Praveen Modanwal (Manduwadih), Sanjay Gupta alias Sanjay Modanwal (Manduwadih), and Madan Modi alias Madan Baranwal (Hazaribagh).
Last Friday, the court had convicted the seven accused of human trafficking and fixed November 24 for hearing on the point of punishment. After hearing, the court pronounced the sentence on Monday....
