PRAYAGRAJ, July 3 -- Seven people were arrested from Pratapgarh on Wednesday in connection with the abduction and forcible religious conversion of a Scheduled Caste woman two years ago, police said. "After the complaint by the victim was received on Tuesday evening, a case was lodged and seven people were arrested on Wednesday morning," said Gulab Chand Sonkar, SHO, Kandhai police station, Pratapgarh. All the arrested have been sent to jail, he added. The woman, now 20 and resident of a village under Kandhai police station area of Pratapgarh, was allegedly abducted by Meraj Ali, resident of Hardattpur, two year ago. Later, he married her in court. Meraj allegedly forced the woman to convert and made her read a religious verse at his maternal uncle's house in Sultanpur. After marriage, the in-laws allegedly beat her and threw her out of their house. On the complaint of the victim, police registered a case against six people, including Meraj, for forced conversion, molestation and murderous attack. SHO Sonkar and his team arrested seven people, including the main accused, on Wednesday. The police have sent Meraj, his brother Firoz and their father Maqsood Ali, Maulana Mohammad Shamim of Takiya village, Israel of Dhammor Sultanpur, Akram of Setapur and a woman from Hardattpur to jail.
