Meerut, Nov. 19 -- A mahant has announced a foot march (padyatra) around the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal on Wednesday. After the declaration by Mahant Rishiraj Giri of Maa Kailadevi Dham, police personnel have been deployed outside the complex, which is referred to as Harihar temple by Hindu groups and issues concerning which are sub judice. The move was opposed by the mosque's management committee, whose president and case litigant Zafar Ali termed it "entirely wrong". Meanwhile, the mahant maintained that his proposed padayatra was within legal bounds. "We are following the court's directions and not entering the mosque. We will only perform circumambulation of the Harihar Temple complex," he said. The local administration said it was reviewing the matter in consultation with both sides. District magistrate Rajendra Pansiya stated: "A final decision on granting permission to the foot march is yet to be taken."
