MEERUT, July 20 -- Taking stringent action against women allegedly uploading abusive content on social media, the Sambhal police have bound them over with Rs.5 lakh sureties each under Section 168 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and served them notices. The accused, identified as sister duo Mahek and Pari, their friend Hina and associate Alam Zarrar, were arrested on July 15. Several objectionable videos were deleted as part of the enforcement, and the police wrote to Instagram and Facebook requesting the suspension of the accused's accounts, officials said. Officials from the cyber cell unit said that both Instagram and Facebook are likely to suspend the accounts for a period of one year. This development comes after public outrage and complaints from Shahbazpur Kala village within the Asmoli police station limits "We have asked Instagram and Facebook to take action against the women for sharing obscene and inappropriate content. Videos have been removed, and notices served under Section 168 of the BNSS. They have been bound over with Rs.5 lakh sureties each. If they violate the terms, further legal action will follow," Sambhal superintendent of police (SP) Krishan Kumar Bishnoi said. Police said the court granted bail to the accused only after setting clear terms -- that they must not create or share any further obscene content and must delete any indecent videos already uploaded. According to the investigation, the two sisters opened an Instagram account in May 2024. Initially, the account failed to gain traction, prompting them to change the name twice. However, when they began uploading sexually suggestive and indecent videos, their content started going viral, and they amassed millions of views and over 4 lakh followers, police said, adding their friend and associate also joined in. During questioning, Pari and Mahek told the police that they earn around Rs.20,000 to Rs.25,000 a month from their social media videos. Their Instagram handle has over 4 lakh followers. Before gaining internet fame, the sisters used to make silver leaves (used in sweets), a craft their parents are still involved in. Their father also runs a small grocery shop....
