AMRITSAR, May 26 -- A Shriomani Akali Dal (SAD) councillor was shot dead in Chheharta locality of Amritsar on Sunday, police officers said. The deceased was identified as 45-year-old Harjinder Singh who was the councillor from Jandiala Guru Municipal Council. According to police, the councillor was in the area to attend an event at the Gurdwara Chheharta Sahib. "After attending the function organized by his brother-in-law, he was going to a hotel for refreshment outside the gurdwara when three to four unidentified persons tried to intercept the councillor, who was on a bike, before firing three to four bullets at him," additional deputy commissioner of police Harpal Singh Randhawa said. The councillor, who was also known as Bahman, was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him dead. "He succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital," the ADCP said. Police said they have identified three persons, who were allegedly involved in the murder of the councillor. They have been identified as Gopi, Amit and Karan Kira, all residents of Jandiala Guru, police said, adding that they will be arrested soon. The accused were associated with the Krishna gang, which was responsible for the shooting, police said. The attack came days after Bahman's house in the city was attacked. "According to his brother and brother-in-law, the attackers were the same individuals who had previously opened fire at his residence and issued threats to him," the senior officer said. A political controversy broke out soon after the incident. SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia blamed the chief minister Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government in the state. "Law and order situation is deteriorating in Punjab. Sitting councillor of the SAD from Jandiala Guru has been shot dead. Few days ago, two unknown persons opened fire at the house of Harjinder Singh at night. He was receiving threats again and again and he lodged a complaint to the Police in this regard. However, no action was taken by the Police and today he was murdered," Majithia said. Meanwhile, police have registered a case under murder charges....
