Haldwani, Dec. 23 -- Nainital police have constituted a special investigation team (SIT) under the leadership of SP City Manoj Katyal to probe into the theft of jewellery worth over Rs.1 crore from Radhika Jewellers in the Mukhani area of Haldwani, officials said on Monday. Police have identified three suspects involved in the act, while more than half a dozen people have been detained for questioning. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manjunath TC said multiple teams have been dispatched to Moradabad, Bijnor and Pilibhit to track the accused, and surveillance has been intensified along the Nepal border. According to police, the jewellery shop owner, Navneet Sharma, closed the shop on Friday night and went home, while the showroom remained shut on Saturday. "When Navneet arrived at the shop on Sunday morning, the shutter was locked from outside. However, as soon as he opened it, he found the entire shop ransacked," the SSP said. "All the goods inside were scattered, the safe had been broken open and a hole nearly two feet wide was found in one of the shop's walls. Around 25 kg of silver, 400 grams of gold jewellery, and about Rs.25,000 in cash were stolen," SSP Manjunath TC said. Preliminary investigation revealed that the burglars allegedly gained access to the jewellery shop by breaking through the wall of an adjoining shop.
