Prayagraj, May 3 -- To celebrate International Labour Day, Dr Rajendra Prasad National Law University (RPNLU), Prayagraj, conducted a legal awareness outreach for brick kiln workers in Gohri village, Soraon. The initiative, organised on Thursday by the university's legal aid society, aimed to inform labourers of their legal rights and available welfare schemes, university officials confirmed on Friday. The programme was held under the patronage of justice Manoj Kumar Gupta, chairman of the Uttar Pradesh state legal services authority (SLSA), and guided by RPNLU vice-chancellor, prof Usha Tandon. Faculty members and law students formed teams that directly engaged with the workers to spread awareness about their entitlements. A key highlight of the event was a street play (Nukkad Natak) titled 'Utthan' meaning upliftment performed by students. The play depicted the harsh realities faced by brick kiln workers, shedding light on issues such as child labour, lack of education, poor working conditions, and systemic poverty. Workers were sensitised about several key legislations and welfare initiatives, including the minimum wages act,1948, the bonded labour system (Abolition) act, the inter-state migrant workmen act, the right to education act, and schemes like the e-Shram card and Ayushman Bharat Yojana. Vice-chancellor prof Tandon remarked, "Labourers, often unskilled and uneducated, are unaware of the rights and protections granted to them. Through the legal aid society, we are committed to empowering marginalised communities and promoting social justice."
