Row between corporators, mayor derails waste Mgmt project
Lucknow, April 30 -- A dispute between the mayor and corporators of Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has led to the cancellation of a Rs 100-crore tender aimed at upgrading the city's waste management infrastructure through the installation of 32 portable compactor transfer stations (PCTS). The move has not only stalled a critical project but has also triggered a legal battle, casting uncertainty over the future of the initiative and the city's sanitation efforts.
The tender, which proposed setting up 32 PCTS units across Zones 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7, was designed to improve efficiency by reducing waste transportation time, fuel costs, and pollution. However, corporators raised objections, alleging irregularities in the bidding process. They claimed several participating companies shared common directors and criticised the swift finalisation of the tender within just 28 days.
"The tender was riddled with irregularities and lacked transparency, forcing us to oppose it," said BJP corporator Pramod Singh Rajan.
The LMC, however, defended its move, citing the contractor's failure to begin work within the mandatory 15-day period as grounds for cancelling the tender.
The contractor has challenged the decision in court, bringing the project to a halt.
"The course of action will be taken as per the court's directions," LMC chief engineer Manoj Prabhat said.
Meanwhile, with no immediate resolution in sight, Lucknow's waste collection and disposal system remains disrupted, with garbage visibly piling up across several parts of the city. Mayor Sushma Kharakwal said, "The tender will be floated again after the court's directives."...
