PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 3 -- One of the accused in a recent robbery case was shot in the leg and arrested during an encounter with the Maheshganj police and a SWAT team on Friday night. A second accused was also apprehended after a brief chase. Police had earlier announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for the arrest of the primary suspect. According to CO Sadar Karishma Gupta, the incident traces back to June 30, when three bike-borne miscreants snatched a bag from the operator of a Jan Seva Kendra in Jaitapur, under the Maheshganj police station area. An FIR was registered, and police began tracking the suspects. On Friday night, a joint team from Maheshganj police and SWAT was conducting checks near the Bahoripur canal culvert when two men on a motorcycle tried to flee upon spotting the police. When officers gave chase, the suspects opened fire. In retaliatory action, Umesh Pal-resident of Ghatampur under Nawabganj police station in Prayagraj-was shot in the leg. He had a Rs 25,000 bounty on his head in connection with the robbery. The second accused, identified as Neeraj Kumar Patel alias Vakil Patel, a resident of Gharwan Ka Purwa Dahiyawan under Holagarh police station, was caught after a short pursuit.
