Roads to be named after Kalam, Shubhanshu; tax on cinemas
LUCKNOW, Aug. 24 -- The executive committee of Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) on Saturday cleared several major proposals aimed at strengthening the city's infrastructure, preserving cultural heritage, and improving civic facilities, as per an official note. The meeting, held at the LMC office in the state capital and chaired by mayor Sushma Kharkwal, also saw nod being given to initiatives ranging from renaming roads to urban beautification and revenue reforms.
A major highlight was the decision to name a road in the Triveni Nagar ward after city-born astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, honouring his contribution to science and space research, the note added. Also, a road in Sarojininagar will now be called Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Marg.
Other approved names include Dr Jagdish Gandhi Marg (Hussainganj to Mawaiya), Mahamana Malviya Marg (Gomti Nagar to Station Road), and Bhagwan Shri Balaji crossing. Green belts were named Maa Tara Upvan and Bhagwan Shri Balaji Upvan.
Also, the committee approved the installation of statues of former defence minister George Fernandes at Vikas Nagar, Ram Baksh Singh at Parivartan Chowk, emperor Vikramaditya at Rae Bareli Road Park and Maharshi Valmiki at Valmiki Vatika Prerna Sthal.
A new branch of Bharatendu Natya Academy will be set up on LMC land. Land in Sarojininagar will be developed as Chhath Puja Sthal, while several green belts were renamed in line with cultural and religious sentiments.
Also, LMC has decided to levy a show tax on cinema halls-Rs 300 per show for multiplexes and Rs 100 for single-screen theatres.
Meanwhile, the committee also raised a demand for strict action against four firms associated with the Jalkal department-M/s Kisan Mazdoor Shramik Sanvida Sahakari Samiti Ltd, M/s KMB Electricals, M/s Pratyaksha Associates, and M/s Abhishek Enterprises-for alleged irregularities. The Jalkal department will probe and take action, LMC said in the note.
Regarding the decisions, mayor Sushma Kharkwal said, "Naming roads after Shubhanshu Shukla and Dr. Kalam will inspire youth towards science and service to the nation. Our aim is to make Lucknow clean, safe, modern, and pothole-free by October."
