RMLIMS docs use minimally invasive treatment for thyroid nodule
LUCKNOW, Aug. 1 -- The Department of Endocrine surgery at Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), Lucknow, performed its first case of Microwave Ablation of a benign thyroid nodule measuring 3x2.5 cm recently, marking the beginning of minimally invasive thyroid nodule treatment in the Institute, stated a press release shared with the media on Thursday. Benign thyroid nodules are small, abnormal growths that develop within the thyroid gland, which is located in the neck. While benign they may cause discomfort, difficulty swallowing, or even affect thyroid hormone production.
Unlike conventional surgery, Microwave Ablation requires only a small puncture by a needle, no stitch, minimising scarring and reducing recovery time significantly. Surgeons can precisely guide the microwave energy to the affected area/nodule, ensuring minimal damage to surrounding tissues. In most cases, the procedure can be performed on a day care basis, allowing patients to return home early.
