LUCKNOW, July 17 -- A new pain management technique developed at the Pain Medicine unit of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) will bring major relief to patients. This technique involves radiofrequency treatment of nerves by special Radiofrequency machines, which reduces the pain of cancer patients, particularly those with gall bladder and pancreas cancer. By combining medication with advanced Minimally Invasive Pain and Spine Interventions (MIPSI), patients can experience relief from pain at twice the rate, says the study that included 60 patients. The Indian Journal of Clinical Anaesthesia has recognised the new method by the institute doctors. Senior faculty anaesthesia department and Pain Physician Prof Anurag Agarwal said that this advanced MIPSI can decrease pain-relieving medication dosage by up to 70%. Patients experience more than 60% improvement in their overall quality of life and also provides relief from symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, and nausea in up to 90% of patients. Patients also experience an increase in appetite, Prof Agarwal added. Prof Shivani Rastogi, also a senior faculty in anaesthesia department and Pain Physician running Pain Medicine OPD, explained that this MIPSI involves intervention to the nerves that transmit pain signals to the brain. This technique is particularly effective for patients with stomach, gallbladder, or pancreatic cancer who often experience severe pain. By applying intervention to these nerves, patients can reduce their reliance on pain medication, including morphine, which can have adverse effects on the body. MIPSI refers to various procedures designed to manage and treat nerve-related conditions, particularly pain. The specific approach depends on the type and severity of the nerve injury or condition, Prof Agarwal explained.HTC...
