Rishikesh-Badrinath highway briefly shut due to boulder fall
Mussoorie, April 29 -- The Rishikesh-Badrinath highway was closed for about an hour due to boulder fall and mud debris that accumulated on the road at Pinola Ghat in Chamoli district on Monday, officials said.
"After boulder falls and mud debris accumulation was reported at Pinola Ghat on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway in the district at around 10 am, the disaster response teams were rushed to the spot who were able to clear the debris within one hour and restore the traffic movement," NK Joshi, Chamoli district disaster management authority officer said.
"Over 54 major landslides spots were identified on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway in the month of December and January this year,10 on Rudraprayag Gauri Kund route,70 on Harsil to Gangotri route and 32 on Dharasu to Barkot and Hanuman Chatti route in the state," Shantanu Sarkar, director of Uttarakhand Landslide Mitigation and Management Centre (ULMMC), said.
He further said that Border Road Organisation, PWD department and National Highway authorities have been assigned the task of treating the landslide zones and the work on over 50% of landslides is currently going. However, work on some of zones has been completed....
