Ribhav Saroha eyes singles glory after doubles triumph in tennis
LUCKNOW, May 9 -- India's own Ribhav Saroha is making waves at the ITF Junior J30 Tennis Tournament, clinching the boys' doubles title on Friday and storming into the boys' singles final with a stunning upset.
Partnered with Aarav Chawla, the Indian duo dominated the doubles final at Vijayantkhand Stadium on Friday, defeating Chukka Lakshya Vardhan and Paranjay Siwach 6-1, 6-1. Their seamless coordination overwhelmed opponents, sealing an effortless straight-sets victory.
In girls' doubles, Angel Patel and Riddhi Shinde staged a comeback thriller, edging Akshita Antil and Sherry Sharma 6-3, 7-5 in a gripping 1-hour-50-minute battle filled with extended rallies and relentless pressure.
Saroha's singles semi-final was the day's highlight. Trailing 4-2 in the first set against top-seeded Om Patel, the rising star mounted a fierce comeback, firing aggressive returns and precise shots to win 6-4, 7-5.
"Every point was a war," Saroha said post-match, crediting his fighting spirit. He'll face qualifier Parthiv Nallagundla in Saturday's final after Parthiv dispatched Shreyanth Mahantesha 6-4, 6-1 in the other semifinal-all-qualifier clash.
In girls' singles, third-seeded Karthika Padmakumar and fourth-seeded Harsha Karthika Oruganti advanced. Harsha overpowered sixth seed Tejaswi Manneni 6-4, 6-2, leveraging sharp serves and baseline winners.
Saroha's form is red-hot-he lifted the boys' singles title at last week's ITF J30 in Bhubaneswar. At home in Lucknow, this doubles win and singles final berth signal a breakout tournament for the 15-year-old.
Uttar Pradesh Police Sports Control Board's athletes hogged limelight in the 29th UP State Senior Athletics Championship in Prayagraj on Friday, winning seven golds, three silvers. Hosts Prayagraj followed with five gold, two silver and five bronzes, while Meerut secured two golds, one silver, two bronzes.
