Revoke suspension of MPs, Oppn urges govt
New Delhi, March 14 -- Two days after the no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla was defeated, a prominent section of Opposition leaders on Friday pushed the government to consider revoking the suspension of eight Lok Sabha lawmakers to allow them to attend the ongoing budget session.
The eight lawmakers, including seven from the Congress, were suspended on February 3 from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the budget session.
According to a person aware of the details, a few Opposition leaders met Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju to consider the revocation.
Opposition leaders, including DMK's Kanimozhi, NCP(SP)'s Supriya Sule, Congress' KC Venugopal, SP's Dharemendra Yadav and TMC's Satabdi Roy had met Speaker Birla on Thursday to consider the same.
"They later met the minister as the Speaker suggested that they take up the issue with the government," said the person quoted above.
A top-ranking functionary, however, indicated that the suspension might not be revoked anytime soon. "At the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee too, the issue was raised by the Congress." the person cited above said. The government, however, remained tight-lipped about its decision.htc...
