PRAYAGRAJ, Nov. 21 -- Cybercriminals posing as Maharashtra police officers allegedly held a retired government employee and his wife from Mumfordganj, Prayagraj, under a "digital arrest" for four days and extorted Rs.12.20 lakh from them. The fraudsters threatened the couple with arrest, claiming that obscene messages were being sent from mobile numbers registered under the victim's Aadhaar card. Fake documents, including a fabricated Supreme Court writ, were also sent to intimidate them. According to the complaint filed at the cyber crime police station, the retired employee received a call around 6:30 pm on November 14 from an unknown number. The caller identified himself as Rajeev Sinha, a representative of TRAI, and claimed that multiple mobile numbers linked to the victim's Aadhaar were being used to send objectionable messages.
