VARANASI, July 23 -- Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), director Prof SN Sankhwar on Tuesday wrote a letter to BHU vice chancellor Prof Sanjay Kumar to replace in charge/head, trauma centre, Prof Saurabh Singh in compliance with the directives received from the National Commission for Women (NCW). "I am writing to you in compliance with the directives received from the National Commission for Women, New Delhi, where I appeared personally on July 14," the letter reads. "In its letter dated July 14, the NCW highlighted critical issues, including workplace harassment allegations against Dr Saurabh Singh, the current professor-In-charge. The NCW recommends the removal of Dr Saurabh Singh from the post and appointment of a new head of trauma centre. Therefore, I strongly recommend the removal of Prof Saurabh Singh. The charge may be given to the director, IMS-BHU, to tide over the current situation which warrants an immediate administrative intervention," the letter says. On July 14, the NCW had also directed the BHU to submit a detailed report in the matter within two weeks. The NCW conducted a hearing on that day in the matter of a woman professor's complaint of harassment at workplace against Dr Singh. On behalf of the BHU, IMS-BHU director Prof SN Sankhwar and chairperson of the women's grievance cell, Prof Royana Singh, appeared before the commission and the complainant was presented virtually during the NCW hearing. After hearing all the parties and considering the facts of the case, the NCW issued the direction and made the recommendation. The NCW requested the VC to change the internal committee as the commission had received numerous complaints pertaining to harassment at workplace at BHU. The NCW has directed the complainant to file a fresh complaint before the new internal committee. In her complaint, the woman professor alleged that Dr Singh and one Ashish Singh harassed her at the workplace. She also alleged that she was threatened by Dr Singh on various occasions that he will tarnish her image which will affect her career....
