LUCKNOW, Sept. 26 -- In a move that promises a major relief for thousands of commuters, schoolchildren and others in the state capital, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has approved a proposal to widen the Pakri bridge-the key link between Alambagh and LDA Colony. The bridge, which is too narrow to tackle the traffic flow, has been causing public inconvenience ever since it was rebuilt in 2014. Heeding to public demand, LDA vice-chairman Prathamesh Kumar constituted a committee under additional secretary, LDA, CP Tripathi to inspect and report on the site. The committee recommended widening the bridge. The construction is expected to begin once final clearance is received from the Smarak Samiti Board. "This decision will benefit lakhs of people," said the LDA vice-chairman. "Once the Smarak Samiti Board clears the final proposal, work will begin immediately," he added. The said bridge is a vital connector between two major areas of Lucknow. Yet, for the past 17 years, this route has remained a point of stress and frustration for the public. In 2008, during the construction of the Buddha Vihar Shanti Upvan, the bridge was dismantled by the then-state government, cutting off the direct road between Alambagh and LDA Colony. Though it was reconstructed in 2014, it was built so narrowly that it could barely accommodate two-way traffic....
