LUCKNOW, Dec. 27 -- Mathematical sciences have evolved into strategic enablers of economic growth and technological innovation, particularly as India aspires to become a global knowledge hub, said Prof SS Khare, president, Indian Mathematical Society in his presidential address at the 91st annual conference of the IMS that began at Malviya Hall of Lucknow University on Friday. Prof Khare, also the former VC, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, highlighted the central role of mathematics as the backbone of science, technology, engineering, and economic planning, with growing relevance in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, governance and national security. The department of mathematics and astronomy, LU, is organising the conference that will conclude on December 29. Scholars and researchers from across the country and abroad are participating in the event. Chief guest Prof Dipendra Prasad emphasised that the primary objective of such international conferences is to disseminate knowledge, foster academic interaction, and bring mathematicians from across the globe to exchange ideas and collaborate on emerging research challenges under one roof. "Modern tools, including algebraic topology, are being used in analysing large, complex, and high-dimensional data. However, there are certain contemporary challenges in data-driven research," said Prof SS Khare. "However, there is a need to begin student-centric teaching approaches, enhanced use of technology, teacher training programmes, curriculum rationalisation, and reforms in evaluation systems," Prof Khare added. Academic secretary, IMS, Prof GP Rajashekhar highlighted that IMS received a record 320 accepted abstracts, reflecting the growing research activity and interest within the mathematical community. Prof MM Shikare, general secretary, IMS, along with others conferred various IMS awards while recognising outstanding contributions to research across diverse areas of mathematics. A Narsinga Rao Memorial Prize for 2025 was awarded to Namita Behera of department of mathematics, Sikkim University, Gangtok, PL Bhatnagar Memorial Prize for 2025 was awarded to Kanav Talwar, New Delhi. Lucknow University's vice chancellor Prof Manuka Khanna, and Prof Vivek Sahai, local organising secretary, were also present....
