LUCKNOW, Sept. 8 -- The Apex Trauma Centre of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) performed the first-ever megaprothesis knee replacement in Lucknow, providing hope and new opportunities for residents facing complex joint issues, officials said. The procedure was led by Dr Amit Kumar, associate professor at the department of orthopaedics. According to SGPGI officials, the procedure was performed on a 45-year-old patient, Sangeeta Devi from Fatehpur, whose right knee had been severely damaged and could not be treated with a standard total knee replacement (TKR) implant. A megaprothesis, a large and specialised artificial prosthesis designed to preserve the limb after extensive bone defects - often due to trauma or tumours - was the only viable solution. Sangeeta Devi, now fully recovered, can walk independently, officials said. Prof RK Dhiman, director of SGPGI, congratulated the entire team.htc...
