Ayodhya, Oct. 2 -- Some 10km from Faizabad city is situated the Muslim-dominated locality Mumtaznagar. It has a population of around 1,000 people, and more than 700 of them are Muslims. The claim to fame of Mumtaznagar is that for the last 60 years, Muslims here have been organising the Ramleela. Traditionally, Ramleela has been organised under the banner of 'Ramleela Ramayan Samiti', a committee constituted by Muslims of Mumtaznagar in 1963 for the promotion of communal harmony. The Ramleela here was staged for 10 continuous days, with different characters of the Ramayana being played by Muslim artists, funded by Muslims, and directed by a group of Muslim directors. This year, however, due to unavoidable reasons, the Ramleela was played only for six days, organisers said. The Ramleela started on September 27 and will continue till October 2, the day of Dussehra. "Here Muslim youths along with Hindu performers play various characters in Ramleela. Although the Muslims who play the characters of Ramayana are practising Muslims, they do not hesitate to be a part of the culture of our Hindu brothers," said Sayyad Majid Ali, the president of Ramleela committee. Like Ali, almost all the Muslim residents of Mumtaznagar have been keeping alive the decades-old custom, under which all arrangements for holding Ramleela are looked after by members of the Muslim community, said Banwari Lal, a resident of Mumtaznagar and member of Ramleela committee. "Being a Muslim-dominated locality, here we think it is our duty to follow the tradition that establishes communal harmony in its truest sense," said Mohammad Ibraheem. "Every year when we organise the play, we get a unique feeling of service. After all, our Hindu brothers are the creation of the same supreme power that has made us," he added. HTC...
