GORAKHPUR, Oct. 11 -- Four people, including two Ramleela artistes, were injured after they were assaulted in Deoria's Ekauna under Rudrapur police station limits on Wednesday night, police said. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where their condition was reported to be stable. According to reports, the clash erupted between members of the Dalit community and other groups during the burning of Ravan's effigy. Locals had reportedly alerted the police earlier, expressing fears of possible disturbances during the Ramleela celebrations, but no preventive action was taken. Later, superintendent of police (SP) Sanjeev Suman removed station house officer (SHO) Umesh Vajpayee and sub-inspector Shiv Chand for negligence and deployed a heavy police force in the area to defuse tension. Five accused have been arrested in connection with the attack.The violence reportedly occurred when artists playing the roles of Lord Ram and Lakshman were collecting donations. A group of local miscreants allegedly pelted stones and attacked them, leading to chaos in the village. Following the incident, angry villagers staged a protest, accusing the local police of inaction, and blocked the road.Additional SP (North) Anand Kumar Pandey confirmed that five accused have been arrested. "The situation is now under control. The site selected for the Ramleela performance was disputed, and people's anger stemmed from police inaction.
