New Delhi, Sept. 21 -- Defence minister Rajnath Singh will inaugurate Tata Advanced Systems Maroc's new manufacturing facility for wheeled armoured platforms this week in Morocco - India's first defence manufacturing plant in Africa, the defence ministry said on Saturday. Singh is heading to the African country on Monday on a two-day official visit. "This will mark the first-ever visit of a Raksha Mantri to the north African nation, underscoring the growing strategic convergence between India and Morocco," defence ministry said in a statement. During the visit, Singh will hold a bilateral meeting with his Moroccan counterpart to bolster defence, strategic and industry cooperation; he will also meet Morocco's industry and trade minister to explore collaboration. "A key highlight of the visit will be the inauguration of Tata Advanced Systems Maroc's new manufacturing facility for the wheeled armoured platform (WhAP) 8x8 at Berrechid. This facility is the first-ever Indian defence manufacturing plant in Africa, which marks an important milestone that reflects the growing global footprint of India's defence industry under the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative," the defence ministry added. Both sides are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation, the statement said.
