Raj Bhavan march today over law and order: Cong
Dehradun, Feb. 16 -- Uttarakhand Congress is set to stage a protest march to the Raj Bhavan in Dehradun on Monday over the "collapse of law and order", unemployment, corruption and other pressing issues facing the state.
State Congress vice president, Suryakant Dhasmana, said the march would mark the first step towards unseating the BJP government in the 2027 assembly elections.
"The state has been dealing with a wide range of issues and the Dhami government has failed miserably on all fronts," he said.
He added that the party expects participation of around 20,000 workers and supporters in the march.
"Our key issues are collapsed law and order, crime against women, monitoring of the CBI probe in the Pauri Garhwal receptionist murder case by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court or High Court, paper leaks, unemployment, corruption, end of MGNREGA, and the US-India deal affecting farmers," he said.
"It will be a massive protest. We are prepared for anything. We won't stop even if the police use lathi charge or arrest us. It will be a historic march," Dhasmana said.
The Congress' protest comes amid a spate of crime incidents across the state, including five murders in 16 days and a double murder in Haldwani.
On February 11, a 42-year-old son of a martyred Colonel was shot dead near Tibetan Market in Dehradun.
On February 14, the state Congress gheraoed the state police headquarters and submitted a memorandum to SP City Pramod Kumar over the "deteriorating" law and order situation.
Former state Congress president and Chakrata MLA Pritam Singh said all workers and office-bearers have assured the leadership that they would work to connect as many people as possible to the Raj Bhavan march and ensure its success. "The Raj Bhavan march on February 16 will be historic, marking the final nail in the coffin of the current state government," Singh said, adding the public is deeply distressed by the BJP government.
As the main Opposition party, the Congress has a responsibility to hold the government accountable on public issues, from the streets to the legislative assembly, he said. Singh alleged that the Dhami government has completely failed on every front. "Crimes against women are rampant, unemployed youth are on the streets, departments are mired in corruption, and farmers are being forced to commit suicide. To divert attention from these burning issues, the BJP is once again raising communal rhetoric, just like in 2022," he said. He added that the people of the state have understood the situation and will not be misled again. "Through the Raj Bhavan gherao on February 16, a decisive voice will be raised against the anti-people policies, corruption and insensitivity of the Dhami government," Singh said.
BJP leader Kundan Parihar said, "Disillusioned by a series of defeats since 2014, the Congress party is completely distraught. This is why the party, which remained silent on public concerns both on the streets and in the House, has suddenly awakened with elections approaching. Its leaders have no concern for nation-building. This is merely an attempt to divert attention from the state's all-round development," he said....
