Rainfall persists across U'khand; Kedarnath records fresh snowfall
Mussoorie, May 7 -- Light to moderate rain was recorded across Uttarakhand up till Wednesday morning, Indian Meteorological Department officials said.
Meanwhile, the Kedarnath Dham in Rudraprayag district recorded a fresh spell of overnight snowfall, they added.
The IMD's Wednesday bulletin said that Chamoli witnessed thunderstorms, and recorded wind speeds reaching 41 kilometres per hour until 8.30am.
In Kedarnath,cloud cover cleared gradually by midday, and pilgrims took ample advantage of the fresh blanket of snow. Pilgrim Anamika Verma described the scene as "divine" and appreciated that trekking routes were left accessible in winter.
Senior priest Ramesh Chandra Posti also praised the administration's efforts to keep pilgrims safe and comfortable amid adverse weather.
Kosiyakutoli in Nainital district recorded the highest rainfall with 55.5 millimetres, followed by Chaubatia in Almora district with 34 millimetres, according to IMD data.
Dehradun, Rishikesh, Nainital and Mussoorie also recorded light showers.
Officials said rainfall continued between 8.30am and 1pm across districts.Stations in Champawat district recorded up to 10 mm of rainfall, while light rain was reported from parts of Pithoragarh district, Dehradun district, Nainital district, Udham Singh Nagar district, Uttarkashi district, Pauri Garhwal district and Chamoli district.
Due to the persistent weather conditions, maximum temperatures remained below normal across the state. Roorkee recorded the highest temperature at 30degC, while Mukteshwar recorded the lowest temperature at 7.1degC.
IMD has issued a seven-day outlook indicating that rainfall and snowfall above 4,000 metres are likely to continue in the hills on May 7 with winds reaching 30-40 kilometres per hour. Rainfall is expected to decrease on May 8, though warnings for lightning and gusty winds remain in Uttarkashi district, Chamoli district, Rudraprayag district, Bageshwar district and Pithoragarh district.
Officials at the Met Centre in Dehradun said a yellow alert has been issued for Thursday and Friday, warning of thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph at isolated places across the hill districts of the state....
