Rainfall leads to 171 road closures in Uttarakhand
Mussoorie, Aug. 27 -- Heavy rains triggered landslides across the state, leaving 171 roads closed for traffic and disrupting the Char Dham Yatra on the Gangotri and Yamunotri routes till Tuesday morning.
On the Yamunotri route, landslides blocked the road at Fedi, Kalyani and Dharasu near the old police station. Restoration work with heavy machines continued for over two hours before the route was cleared.
At Syanachatti, where an artificial lake had formed on August 21, drainage and debris removal were underway on Tuesday. "Currently, the water is flowing three feet below the Syanachatti bridge, which was reopened two days ago. However, erosion along the bridge abutment remains a concern, and gabion wall construction is in progress," said Shardul Gusain, district disaster management officer, Uttarkashi.
Pilgrim movement on the Gangotri highway was also hit due to a major landslide at Naluna on Monday. "Intermittent rockfalls are hampering work, but BRO and PWD are jointly carrying out clearance," said Uttarkashi district magistrate (DM) Prashant Arya.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for August 28 and 29, forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorms in Dehradun, Nainital, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh....
