Rain likely to be above normal in U.P. for a week: IMD
LUCKNOW, May 23 -- A day after sudden change in weather causing rain, thunder and hailstorm in various parts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday night, the India meteorological department (IMD) has forecast that thunderstorms will continue in spells over the next four to five days.
As per the forecast, Terai belt is likely to receive maximum rainfall in the state as the rainfall activity over entire UP is also expected to be above normal from May 23 to 29. The IMD has issued yellow alerts for several districts, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning or gusty winds, with a speed of 40-50 kmph, are very likely at isolated places over the state.
"These thunderstorms are a result of the western disturbances over Punjab and then the inflection of the westerly and the easterly disturbances over the Bay of Bengal," said senior scientist at IMD Lucknow Mohd Danish. As per him, the wind systems picked up more moisture at the inflection point and brought it over the Terai belt, central and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh.
"While the heat index in certain districts may be high during the daytime, a return of the heatwave is not likely for at least a week now," the weatherman said. According to the IMD's report, the state received 9.2mm of rainfall from May 16 to 22, which is a 118% departure from the normal for this period, which is 4.2mm.
For East UP, 11.3mm rain was recorded against a normal of 4.4mm, which is a 157% departure, and 6.1mm rain was recorded for west UP against a normal of 4.1 mm, which is a 58% above normal rain for this time of the year, the report said. On Thursday, the highest rain was recorded in Gorakhpur with 19.6 mm rainfall. Capital Lucknow had recorded 6.4mm the previous night.
According to Mohd Danish, Gorakhpur, Bahraich and surrounding districts will get most of the rainfall in the state over the next few days. Lucknow recorded a maximum temperature of 33.9 degrees, which is a 6.3 degrees Celsius above normal, and an almost 5 degrees drop from the maximum temperature recorded on Wednesday.
The forecast for Lucknow is a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of thundery development or light rainfall, with the maximum and minimum temperature hovering around 36 and 25 degrees Celsius respectively.
As for the rest of the state, the highest maximum temperatures recorded were at Churk, Lakhimpur Kheri and Varanasi with 37.4, 37 and 36.6 degrees Celsius respectively. The lowest minimum temperatures were recorded at Meerut, Aligarh and Barabanki, with 18.2, 20 and 20.4 degrees Celsius respectively....
