Rain lashes parts of UK, 82 roads closed
Mussoorie, July 17 -- Rains lashed several parts of Uttarakhand in the last 24 hours till Wednesday, disrupting normal life and causing the closure of 82 roads due to landslides and debris flow.
In one of the major incidents, three people were trapped in the strong currents of a swollen seasonal stream near Kainchi Wala in the Selaqui area of Dehradun on Tuesday night. They were rescued by State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) hours later.
The rescue operation was led by additional sub-inspector Suresh Tomar, who along with his team, used a raft to safely evacuate the stranded people, according to SDRF officials.
The Dehradun centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued an orange alert for Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Nainital, and Bageshwar districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall and lightning at isolated locations till Thursday. The remaining districts are under a yellow alert, with a forecast of intense rainfall spells. The IMD further predicted that on Friday, heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Pauri, Nainital, and Bageshwar districts.
On Saturday, similar conditions are expected in Pithoragarh and Bageshwar. For Sunday, an orange alert has again been issued, forecasting heavy rainfall at isolated places in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar.
According to the IMD, intense to very intense rainfall accompanied by lightning were recorded in Dehradun, Tehri, and Nainital districts. Isolated heavy rainfall was also reported from various parts of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Haridwar, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, and Bageshwar.
Between 8.30 am and 1 pm on Wednesday, Laksar received the highest rainfall at 43 mm, followed by Kalsi with 40 mm, Lansdowne with 26 mm, Haldwani with 21 mm, and Maldevta with 19.5 mm. Sahastradhara ITI recorded 15.5 mm, Koti 14.5 mm, Rani Majra 14 mm, Raiwala 11.5 mm, and Roorkee-Amfu and Naini Danda both recorded 11 mm. Vikas Nagar, Hatibharkala, Narendra Nagar, and Kaladhungi reported lesser but significant rainfall ranging between 6 mm and 8.5 mm.
State received 6.9 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours till Wednesday morning. Dehradun registered a substantial excess with 52.1 mm, 230 percent above the average of 15.8 mm. While Udham Singh Nagar reported no rainfall, while Champawat received just 0.3 mm, marking a 99 percent shortfall. Bageshwar was the only district with a slight excess, recording 9.9 mm against a normal of 9.4 mm.
As of Wednesday morning, 82 roads remained blocked across the state due to landslides and boulder falls. These included one road under the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), four state highways, 21 Public Works Department (PWD) roads, and 58 rural roads under PMGSY and RWD. In Tehri district, 11 roads were reported closed. Two important stretches-Kempty-Thatyur bypass and Kempty-Chadogi road-were blocked by landslides near Kempty police station. According to Roshan Verma, Additional Assistant Engineer with PWD Thatyur Division, heavy machinery was deployed and both roads were reopened by 3 pm.
Tehri district magistrate Nitika Khandelwal conducted inspections of ongoing landslide prevention works in the Neergarh Shivpuri Range near Narendranagar.
In Pauri Garhwal district, district magistrate Swati S Bhadoria inspected the Srinagar-Kotdwar National Highway, parking zones, and waste disposal areas. She directed National Highway and municipal officials to construct roadside drainage and clear culverts in the Pauri market area by July 26....
