Rahul Gandhi: Quest to regain lost ground
India, Jan. 1 -- Rahul Gandhi has been working relentlessly to regain the lost ground in Uttar Pradesh despite the Congress's dismal performances in successive Lok Sabha and assembly elections, as well as a weak party organisation. Some results were seen in 2024 when the party won six Lok Sabha seats in the state.
In the 2017 assembly election, the Congress contested the assembly election in alliance with the Samajwadi Party. The Rahul Gandhi- Akhilesh Yadav duo hit the campaign trail with the 'UP ke ladke' slogan, but the alliance faced a crushing defeat as the Modi wave swept the state. In the 2019 Lok Sabha and 2022 assembly elections, the Congress went solo to face defeat again. The BJP's Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi in the party stronghold of Amethi in 2019. Unruffled by the defeat, he worked on a strategy for the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The Congress not only won its traditional seats of Rae Bareli and Amethi but increased its tally from one to six seats. With a year left for the 2027 assembly election, Rahul Gandhi faces the daunting task of building the party organisation and maintaining equations with his ally, the SP that is upbeat after the 2024 Lok Sabha election victory. The Congress is eyeing its traditional support base of Muslims, Dalits and Brahmins, the same segment being wooed by its ally....
