Rahane, Samson shine on opening day
LUCKNOW, Nov. 27 -- Even before the start of the five-match T20I home series against South Africa next month, Shivam Dube doesn't want to miss any opportunity to bat. He hardly got a chance to bat long in the five-match series in Australia early this month so he's using the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) to his advantage.
Dube's best in Australia was 22 runs and 2/20 in the penultimate game of the series at the Oval Carrara, which India won by 48 runs after scoring 167/8.
On Wednesday, in the Elite Group A's opener in Lucknow, Dube got to play just two balls to stay unbeaten on five with Mumbai scripting a facile seven-wicket win against Railways. However, he wasn't satisfied.
So, he chose to make use of facilities of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, batting for over 30 mins after the groundsmen erected the practice nets especially for him. His big hits, mostly over the boundary ropes in front of the wicket, at the nets were keenly watched by Team India's skipper Suryakumar Yadav (47).
Suryakumar also looked desperate to have good-match practice before the series against South Africa. He was in his usual nick, hitting Railways bowlers with sheer power all around the ground before being trapped lbw by left-arm pacer Rahul Sharma on a yorker. He targeted leg spinner Karn Sharma for big hits in his own style, sweeping and pulling well.
The target never looked difficult for defending champions Mumbai as veteran Ajinkya Rahane was in a sublime touch as he smashed 62 in 33 balls, comprising four boundaries and five sixes.
Another India star, Sanju Samson too enjoyed his willow-power in the match against Odisha as Kerala notched a 10-wicket win, at the B Ground of the venue. Captain Samson stayed unbeaten on 51 (41b, 6x4, 1x6), while his partner Rohan Kunnummal proved a headache for as many as seven bowlers.
After playing a few deliveries with soft hands in the beginning, Kunnummal came into his own and went on striking an unbeaten 60-ball 121 laced with10 boundaries and as many sixes as Kerala chased down 177 runs target in just 16.3 overs....
