PWD, NHAI review UER-II; to expedite work on safety
New Delhi, Aug. 23 -- The Delhi government and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) held a review meeting on the Urban Extension Road (UER)-II on Wednesday to review key infrastructure challenges on the road and accelerate the pace of remaining works related to signages, drainage and service lanes, officials said on Thursday. UER-II was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.
Delhi public works department minister Parvesh Verma, during the meeting, directed the Delhi Traffic Police to ensure awareness in the catchment areas through signages, public announcements, and awareness drives.
"Surveillance cameras, adequate manpower, and patrolling vans should be deployed across the corridor, while ambulances should be stationed at regular intervals to guarantee a swift emergency response system. UER-II is a high-speed lifeline for Delhi. We will ensure that passengers get world-class infrastructure facilities without compromising on safety and security," the minister said in a statement.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from NHAI, Delhi Traffic Police, PWD, the discom BSES, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) , the environment, revenue and power departments, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
Verma said that service roads along the corridor should be constructed immediately by NHAI so that people living in nearby areas can have smooth and safe access to UER-II. "This would not only improve local connectivity but also ensure better traffic management on the corridor," he added.
"Delhi Jal Board has completed shifting of the water pipeline at village Nangli Sakrawati, resolving a critical component of the project," Verma added.
Verma said that the departments have been asked to put in place a robust drainage system in vulnerable areas such as Karala-Kanjhawala Road, Mundka-Karala Road, and near village Barwala. "The drainage plan should be permanent to avoid repeated waterlogging issues," he added.
BSES has been instructed to fast-track the installation of transformers for the power needs of package 5 of UER-II while directing NHAI to coordinate with the India International Convention Centre (IICC) for smooth execution.
The 54.21km Delhi stretch of UER-II, running from Alipur through Bawana, Rohini, Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh and Dwarka to Dichaon Kalan, built at a cost of Rs.5,580 crore, was inaugurated last Sunday.
The six-lane highway, conceived as Delhi's third ring road under the Delhi Master Plan Road 2021, includes new links to Bahadurgarh, Sonipat.
The corridor will ease traffic on Delhi's Inner and Outer Ring Roads and busy points including Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan and NH-9.
The new spurs will improve industrial connectivity, cut city traffic and speed up goods movement in the NCR. It will cut travel time from Indira Gandhi International Airport to various locations in southwest and northwest Delhi by 40-60%, according to government estimates.
Officials say the route will provide faster connectivity for commuters travelling from Chandigarh to Gurugram and Delhi's IGI Airport.
Sections around Najafgarh, Mundka and Alipur were opened in phases previously, benefiting previously undeveloped areas including Karala, Alipur and Bawana.
The route provides quicker access to south Delhi, Noida and Faridabad while improving connectivity to areas such as Dwarka, Mahipalpur and Vasant Kunj.
The complete UER-II spans 76km-54.21km in Delhi and 21.5km in Haryana-with a total construction cost of Rs.8,000 crore. Declared as a national highway, the project is being implemented by the NHAI in five packages, with the Delhi Development Authority funding the capital's section....
