Public Accounts Committee key to accountability, says Mahana
Lucknow, Sept. 19 -- Addressing the inaugural meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Thursday, Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Satish Mahana, said the committee comprised experienced legislators whose capabilities will be utilised to strengthen democracy.
He emphasised that a democratic system is based on accountability to the Constitution and that the government is run on public taxes. "It is the direct responsibility of public representatives to ensure the proper use of taxpayer funds, especially those belonging to the poor," he said.
Highlighting the importance of the PAC, Mahana noted that while all committees play a crucial role, financial discipline makes this committee's significance greater. "In a democratic system, the people's voice is heard through committees. Addressing and resolving their problems is the primary duty of public representatives," he added. Mahana urged members to hold serious discussions on issues of public interest. He advised new members to learn from senior colleagues and work together to further strengthen the committee's functioning.
Newly elected PAC Chairman and senior MLA, Mehboob Ali, welcomed Mahana and thanked him for his guidance. Describing the meeting as a historic moment, he said Mahana, as Speaker, has always worked beyond party lines at the policy level.
