GORAKHPUR, Nov. 30 -- There were some tense moments when the Baraat of a 29-year-old Muslim groom reached the residence of his would-be 19-year-old Dalit bride in Basti district's Dharta village under Parasrampur police station area. The incident that occurred on Friday evening triggered sudden protests from a local Hindu organisation-Vishwa Hindu Mahasangh-which opposed interfaith marriage. To prevent further tension, police detained the groom and four of his family members. Superintendent of police, Basti, Abhinandan said: "Both are adults. Police set the groom and four others free after verification but the marriage did not take place." Station officer, Parasrampur police station, Bhanu Pratap Singh said, "Some group attempted to create unrest at the spot. To maintain peace, we temporarily detained the groom and some baraatis and initiated verification. The situation is fully under control now." The Dalit woman's mother said her daughter was adamant on marrying Sajid who works as a painter in Mumbai. She said her husband and she gave their consent to marriage under their daughter's pressure but they were against marrying her to a Muslim. The woman's parents also said they had not registered any complaint with the police in this regard. Some locals claimed that the Dalit woman had gone to Gonda district to attend a wedding some time back where she met Sajid, a resident of Patkholi village in Basti. Both came close gradually and later decided to marry. Supporters of the couple, along with members from both families, said the marriage had been arranged with mutual consent and that all required documents had been prepared....
