LUCKNOW, Nov. 18 -- Mumtaz PG College remained abuzz with activity since morning when voters from Lucknow, Hardoi, Lakhimpur, Rae Bareli and Sitapur began turning up to exercise their right to franchise as part of the Lucknow University Associated College Teachers' Association (LUACTA) elections on Monday. But the counting process faced a setback when teachers protested alleged irregularities in the polls, calling for a re-election. Over 1,000 voters were registered with LUACTA, of which 50 opted for postal ballot on Sunday while 888 cast their vote on Monday, said returning officer SP Tripathi. In the evening, the counting process was delayed after 17 extra votes were found in the ballot box containing votes from Rae Bareli. Another issue cropped up when 84 votes were found during the counting for the commerce representative's election while there were only 48 registered voters in the department. Subsequently, the counting was stalled for a few hours amid protests and slogans like 'Band karo, band karo - vote chori band karo' and 'Nahi chalegi nahi chalegi, tanashahi nahin chalegi'. Suspense over the results continued till late at night with the counting process still underway. Several voters even demanded a re-election. Police force was already deployed since morning. The elections were held for the posts of president, vice-president, general secretary, joint secretary, treasurer, commerce representative and for district president and district general secretary posts in Rae Bareli. Prof Manoj Pandey and Prof Siddhartha Singh contested for the post of president while Prof Anshu Kedia and Amit Rai contested for the post of secretary. Pandey contested for the fifth consecutive time while Kedia contested the election for fourth consecutive time this year. Prof Narendra Kumar Singh, Mohd Habib, Sanjay Kumar Singh, Saurabh Kumar Mishra, Syed Mohsin Raza and Indrapal contested for the post of vice-president.
