Probe on after expired chips given to kids at anti-drug event
Haridwar, Nov. 20 -- The food safety and drug administration department has initiated an investigation after expired potato chips were distributed to school students during an anti-drug pledge ceremony organised by the Social Welfare Department in Haridwar, officials said on Wednesday.
By Wednesday evening, a notice was issued to Mahadev Enterprises - the shop from where the expired packets were allegedly purchased - directing it to submit its food licence, purchase bills, related documents and a reply to the notice.
A total of 900 packets of chips were distributed to students at the event held at the Rishikul auditorium on Tuesday. Fourteen were purchased from Mahadev Enterprises located in the Deep Ganga Shopping Mall, and found to have crossed their expiry date, officials said.
During a follow-up inspection on Wednesday, officials again found 15 more packets of chips (45 grams) past their expiry date at the same shop, they said. "We have seized the packets, and once the trader submits the required documents and replies to the notice, stern action will be taken," said Haridwar senior food safety officer Duleep Jain.
The event was attended by city legislator Madan Kaushik, Mayor Kiran Jaissal and district officials. "Officials have been instructed to take appropriate action and ensure that in future, the expiry of all packed food items are checked," Jaissal said....
