Probe launched into 25-year-old junior resident suicide case: Cop
Dehradun, March 28 -- Dehradun Police has begun recording statements of colleagues and staff at the college of a 25-year-old junior resident who allegedly died by suicide in the early hours of Wednesday, an officer aware of the matter said on Friday.
According to an officer, the woman was found dead in her car near the medical college after allegedly injecting a substance into her body through a cannula.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, with the student's family alleging that she was being "harassed" by the head of the department (HoD) of ophthalmology at the institute. According to the family, the woman had spoken to her father shortly before her death and expressed distress over the alleged harassment.
The deceased's father has accused the HoD of mentally harassing his daughter and awarding her zero marks despite her performing well academically.
On Wednesday, police registered an FIR against the HoD of her department under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for abetment to suicide.
The woman had been studying at Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences since September 2023 and was living in rented accommodation with her mother.
Sub-inspector (SI) Praveen Pundir, the investigating officer, said statements of the family, the HoD, colleagues and college staff have been recorded.
"The woman's family has alleged harassment by the HoD. We have recorded statements of the family, the HoD, colleagues and staff, and examined her academic records. Some other documents have been sought," he said, adding that the post-mortem report is awaited.
Pundir said the HoD, who assumed charge in December, denied having any role in awarding marks.
"It is alleged that the HoD harassed the deceased and awarded her zero marks despite her being a good student. However, she told us she had no role in awarding marks," he added.
Meanwhile, the college, in a letter to the senior superintendent of police (SSP), stated that the woman had been undergoing psychiatric treatment for a prolonged period and had attempted suicide earlier.
"During her postgraduate course, she had spoken about suicide. She attempted suicide two years ago while admitted in the ICU and again on December 31, 2025," the letter stated, adding that her guardians were aware of her condition and had been ensuring regular psychiatric care....
